Papakura’s first cinema, rebuilt inside as six apartments upstairs and new shops below.
The historic Star Building started life as Papakura’s first cinema. It was one of the first buildings in South Auckland to be earthquake strengthened under the new laws.
The building kept its special original 1920s exterior, but needed major renovation and restructuring to bring it up to standard. We rebuilt the whole internal structure and fitted it out with six upmarket apartments upstairs and three new shops downstairs. We also renovated the two existing shops on the main street.
Bringing light into the apartments was a challenge, because of the size of the original windows, so we installed skylights. Chris angled the skylights into each room, creating a special feature that brings a large shaft of light into the space. The skylight supplier heard about his extra craftsmanship and, while in New Zealand, came to see how he had worked their product into the building.

As clients we were very pleased with the outcome and enjoyed working with Heineke Builders who were always professional, resolved problems quickly and effectively and showed initiative when dealing with the myriad of consultants engaged on the project as we progressed through the rebuild project.
